PRESENT DAY 71: The Constitution IS the Separation of Church and State
The Christians in America are on the war path. They’ve stacked the court with Christian nationalists, namely Amy Coney Barrett, Neil Gorsuch, Clarence Thomas, Sam Alito, John Roberts and probably Brett Kavanaugh. The results have been startlingly un-American. This anti-American “Supreme" Court has in the few short years of its installation legalized discrimination, deciding that the act of baking a cake can somehow be against Christian values. They’ve nullified part or the 14th amendment, deciding that someone who engages in insurrection is perfectly suited to run for the presidency and occupy that office. They had to overrule the clear and obvious decision of the Colorado Supreme Court, a legit supreme court, in order to make that anti-American ruling. They’ve given a get out of jail free pass to any president who violates the law while holding office, as if violating the law can somehow be an “official act.” This was meant for Trump, of course, since these people know full well that neither Biden nor Harris will take advantage of this sort of unconstitutional authority. They know that Trump, their benefactor, did and would again, given the opportunity. Nothing could be more obvious than that the three “justices” appointed by Trump must recuse themselves from any cases having to do with Trump.

None of them, however, has given any indication that ethics plays any role in their behavior. Some, like Thomas, Alito and Gorsuch, have made every indication that ethics plays no role in their behavior. Perhaps most disturbing of all is this “Supreme” Court’s decision to shove their religious beliefs about when life begins down our throats. Apparently they haven’t noticed the fact that we celebrate birthdays, not conception days, because even in Biblical times when so-and-so begat so-and-so, life began at birth. For what ought to be obvious reasons, there is no mention of those not born. They overruled Roe v. Wade, which rightly separated religious ideology from rational legal thought and kept the government and politicians out of the healthcare decisions of women. Men, of course, don’t have to worry about government infringing on their healthcare since men are still making most of these deacons and since Christianity is a patriarchal institution that relegates women to second class status and even Christian women like Coney Barrett accept this as part or their “faith.” Thus they will allow laws that infringe on a woman’s right to self autonomy though they would never consider such a thing regarding men, as legitimate justice Ketanji Brown Jackson pointed out in her rightly righteous dissent of this obvious move toward ending the separation of church and state upon which the United States was founded.

It’s fashionable now to claim that since the founders were all Christian, they meant for the United States to be a Christian nation. This, of course, is obvious foolishness since you could also argue that since the founders were all men, they meant for this to be a men’s club only nation. In a way, of course, they did but that outdated idea has been tossed where it belongs - into the trash bin of history. Nevertheless, the men only idea certainly has real appeal for patriarchal christian nationalists as does the idea that since the founders were all white, they meant for this to be a whites only country, which is where the christian nationalists happily insect with white supremacists and other neo-nazi types. But I’d offer one simple fact to refute the notion that the founders meant for this to be a Christian country and that fact is that they wrote a constitution. They wrote the US Constitution. I’m no constitutional scholar but you don't have to be to know that they spent a lot of time, energy and argument pounding out the US Constitution and that they ended up with a document meant to be the foundation of a country based on the rule of law. The Constitution is the basis for all law in the United States. I don't think even the christian nationalists on the current Trump “Supreme” Court can find an argument against that, short of throwing the Constitution out altogether, as their benefactor and patron Trump has actually suggested during some of his deranged rants. So we just have to ask one question to determine whether or not the United States was meant to be a Christian nation: who makes the laws? The answer, of course, is that we do. As set up by the Constitution, representatives elected by the people make the laws. In other words, man makes the laws. “Man,” that is, in 1776 but “man and woman” in the 21st century. The laws of the United States are manmade laws. They are not God’s laws. God’s laws, god’s laws, gods’ laws or any other such faith based delusion. The laws of this country are made by men and that makes this a secular country with the separation of church and state baked in as completely as sugar in a sugar cookie. The Constitution by its very existence separates church and state. That was how they meant it to be and that’s how it is still. Christians and christian nationalists will try anything they can to undermine this foundation of the United States and, indeed, they are doing just that from the grassroots to the highest court in the land. But they can never legitimately undo the separation of church and state other than by ripping up the Constitution altogether and, no doubt, substituting the Bible as many or most or all or them would certainly do given the chance. The Trump “supreme” court is doing the bidding of the christian nationalists in the Federalist Society and the other fundamentalist groups that installed them. They are pretending that it’s possible to do away with the separation of church and state in the United States. They’re aiming to turn our democracy into a theocracy but again, there is no legitimate way to do this. They know it and we know it. But they prefer their christian god’s law to the Constitution. In other words, they want nothing to do with the US Constitution and that creates the dire state that we find ourselves in today - dealing with a “supreme” court whose goal is to end the authority of the very document that gives them the power that they have in the first place. They don't want to just bite the hand that feeds them; they want to bite it off.
